If you are a woman and living in such a colony of apartment blocks and you are confronted by an intruder who is most probably drunk and behaving in a rude and disrespectful manner; thinks he can intimidate you and try to break into your house; follow the following precautionary steps

Let us assume that you are living in an apartment.  The first things you must know readily are:

  1. Flats usually involve a communal entry, which may or may not be well protected. Beyond that the next line of defence is your room, or flat, which will have its own door.
  2. Blocks of flats are favourite day-time targets for intruders/thieves. They know that in many blocks most people will be out at work during the day.
  3. That most people in the block hardly know each other, so strangers stand out.
  4. That communal entry is easy to get through, and corridors and staircases tend to be deserted, giving them plenty of time to work.
  5. Ground floor flats are more vulnerable than others. They are easier to loot because things do not have to be carried downstairs, and are easier to escape from if the thief is disturbed.

If you are a woman and living in such a colony of apartment blocks and you are confronted by an intruder who is most probably drunk and behaving in a rude and disrespectful manner; thinks he can intimidate you and try to break into your house; follow the following precautionary steps:

  1. Challenge him verbally by shouting.  If the attempt goes on, scream your head off.  Don’t be embarrassed about it, just do it. It will have the dual effect scaring off most intruders, and alerting people in adjoining rooms.
  2. Immediately dial Police without hesitation. For people in India, dial 100.

Do not call the Apartment security or Association members instead of calling Police control room.  For all that you may know, the intruder can be part of the Apartment security personnel or an Association member whom you do not recognize.

If you are a house-wife and you are mostly alone at home when your husband is at work, the chances of having an intruder who violates your privacy and a threat to your safety and security are very high.  In such an unfortunate circumstances of having a drunk intruder, it is often extremely hard for normally peaceful and law abiding citizens to imagine themselves calling POLICE for help.
